What is Polygon?

Polygon is a “proof-of-stake” protocol and one of the largest projects within the crypto industry, originally designed to make transactions on the Ethereum blockchain more energy efficient, faster and more affordable than on the mainnet. It is a layer 2 or “sidechain” scaling solution that runs alongside the Ethereum blockchain and is able to achieve a speed of 7,200 transactions per second (TPS) which is a significant jump when compared to the 15 TPS achieved by the Ethereum blockchain when used directly. The success of Polygon lies in its Defi-based decentralized applications, and non-fungible tokens (NFT), where developers can build and connect to any Ethereum-compatible blockchain—hence Polygon is referred to as a layer 2 framework. • Are NFTs bad for the environment?

Yes and no. NFTs minted on early generation blockchains, like Ethereum, generally require a lot of energy due to the way "proof-of-work" consensus algorithms behave to validate transactions. To mint a single NFT on “proof-of-work” blockchains is ...
